Final phone application

This video shows the initial sign-up and login-in page when the app is opened for the first time. The user has to firstly fill in their details and then sign-up for the app. Then once this is done, the login screen appears where the app can then be accessed. After the first time using the app, the sign-up screen will not come up anymore and it just welcomes the user back.

Agenda

This shows how the agenda/planner works in the app. After the login, the app opens to the monthly agenda as the start screen. From here, the user can click on the date that they want to view and it opens to the agenda of that specific day where events can be viewed. If the user wants to add an event to the agenda, the plus symbol is clicked on the top-right of the screen, where the information of the event can be filled in and added. Lastly, it is also possible to change the agenda from a monthly calendar to a weekly calendar to gain a better overview of the user’s week.

Feedback

This shows how the user can access the feedback section of the app. This page receives the feedback from the watch and then displays the data for the user to review and reflect on.

Tips

This shows the overstimulation tips page, where the user can add or remove different relaxation tips that are displayed on the watch. In order to add a new tip, the plus sign in the top-right of the screen is pressed and the user can add a new tip and link it to either the red or yellow button.

Profile, to-do list, settings

This video shows the profile page, the to-do list page, and lastly the activity page in the settings. The profile page is where the user can update their information such as their email or phone number. The to-do list is accessed through the note-taking icon in the agenda, where the user can write in different things that need to be done throughout the week that aren't significant events. Lastly, the activity page in the settings is there so the user can customize the color associated with a specific activity as well as to change the notification timing within each specific activity.

Final watch application

After co-design session 2 concept 5 was improved with the added conditions and the final design was created. An overview of the mock-up screens of the final design can be seen in the image. Also, the use of the application can be seen in the video below.

Watch app

Final watch design

The final watch is based on the third concept. It has a machined aluminum body with a matt finish and a silicone band with a black satin finish.

The body of the watch is 32 x 40 x 7 mm (l x w x d) with a 28 x 36 mm screen. The top band is 90 x 20 mm and the bottom one is 110 x 20mm. This length is based on the wrist size of the codesigner, these dimensions allow her to wear the watch using the middle one of the five holes.

Because of this, the use of the watch does not have to be limited to just the application we developed. Our co-designer mentioned that setting up most smartwatches is simply too much work for her, and she is likely not the only person with autism that feels this way. Because this watch is only focused on a single application, it requires little to no pre-use setup. It could function as a platform for many smartwatch applications specifically designed for people with autism. It could create some clarity for people with autism in the huge market of smartwatches, as this watch is designed specifically for them.

If the watch gains some popularity, new users will be more likely to test it out, however, the marketing for this watch would be tricky in this situation. Too much marketing or popularity could lead to the watch not just being recognized by people in the market for a smartwatch or other device that helps users with autism. This would take away from the discretion of use, which for some users could greatly reduce the value of the watch. It could force users into uncomfortable situations where they are forced to talk about their autism when they might not feel comfortable discussing that.

The watch is designed according to our co-designer's style, shape and size preferences to be used with the watch application. However key decisions in the design process of the watch are made to fit not just our co-designer, but many people with autism. The watch is simple, clean and fits into the current smartwatch market; use of it will not raise any questions that could put the user in an uncomfortable position.

Watch product

Physical prototype

The prototype consists of three main parts; the band, the body of the watch, and the screen.

The band is made of two stacked layers of  1mm thick rubber, to get the desired thickness. This is then cut to shape and drilled through to create holes used to fit the watch. A cut and polished nail are used for the pin.

The body of the watch is made of PU foam, it is milled, filleted, chamfered, and then rounded off, as shown in the illustration of the build plan. A small laser cut button is glued on the side and the whole part is spray painted.

The screen is laser cut 2mm thick PET-G, the backside and sides are painted black and the screen is connected to the body of the watch with a pressure fit connection.
