Context Mapping

To start off the project, research was conducted in the form of a context mapping study. The aim of the study was to investigate autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and how to integrate people with ASD in co-designing sessions more effectively. The literature review was divided in five main topics; societal trends and the changing perspective on ASD, an introduction to ASD, an introduction to assistive technologies associated with ASD, human-centered design, and co-design with ASD participants.

The research suggested that due to ASD referring to a wide diversity of cases such as impairments in social interactions, sensory anomalies, repetitive behavior, and varying levels of intellectual disability it is difficult to have a concrete method to co-design with individuals.

A scenario was drawn of a social situation with a person that has ASD. the person wears a product that signals the person about taking a rest to prevent overstimulation. This notification helps the user with the prevention and gives the user a summary of when he was overstimulated and what he could do next time to prevent it.
